LINES OF THE DAY

". . . But the past does not exist independently from the present. Indeed, the past is only past because there is a present, just as I can point to something over there only because I am here. But nothing is inherently over there or here. In that sense, the past has no content. The past -- or more accurately, pastness -- is a position. Thus, in no way can we identify the past as past." p. 15

". . . But we may want to keep in mind that deeds and words are not as distinguishable as often we presume. History does not belong only to its narrators, professional or amateur. While some of us debate what history is or was, others take it into their own hands." p. 153

Archivos de Indias

. . . . We were conducted around The Archivos de Indias this AM by colleagues.

Carlos III in the 18th C ordered all the documents that dealt with Spain's empire east and west to be housed in one building. This edifice is modeled much like his palace-hunting grounds Escorial -- the advisor who gave him the ideas is buried ... in New Orleans, which this is mentioned on his tomb.  One of the Archives's colleagues has spent time in the Historic Museum of New Orleans deciphering the handwriting of the Spanish documents there -- her specialty. The other has done work with Lubbock TX, which university there has a program that sends students to Sevilla for 6 months.  It's amazing this internationalism, which, of course, TX is so antipathic about -- just saw the news today o boy, what Abbott's done to the school system in Houston -- because Houston is a Dem stronghold.  Terrifying what's going on and what is going to happen.

Black People Save The Country!

. . . . Black People save the country. Once again.

Not only were they forced by violence to build this country, they have to save the country that over 400 years later continues its systemic and systematic abuse of them.  Over and over.

Can we now have Stacy Abrams in charge of vaccine distribution and vaccination organization? Please? Actually let us have Stacy Abrams in charge of organizing everything!

There are Those who suggest Stacy Abrams should be given Winds of Winter to finish, as well as rewrite HBO's GOT. 🤣

BTW, wtf? Giuliani yelling about trial by single combat to decide this election? How trollee troll can he get!!!!! ðŸ¤£

Meadow Lake Wind Farm - Chalmers, Indiana

. . .  During our drive from Chicago to Columbus, IN, we drove through the Meadow Lake Wind Farm.

These identical, white, elongated, three-bladed turbines give the impression of aliens, perhaps out of the imagination of H.G. Wells.  Studded throughout field after field of perfectly identical GMO-ed corn rows of exactly the same height, with off in the distance the occasional farmstead turned resolutely from the interstate, wrapped in protective stands of trees, I swore this was a mm sf novel cover from the mid-1960's.
