LINES OF THE DAY

". . . But the past does not exist independently from the present. Indeed, the past is only past because there is a present, just as I can point to something over there only because I am here. But nothing is inherently over there or here. In that sense, the past has no content. The past -- or more accurately, pastness -- is a position. Thus, in no way can we identify the past as past." p. 15

". . . But we may want to keep in mind that deeds and words are not as distinguishable as often we presume. History does not belong only to its narrators, professional or amateur. While some of us debate what history is or was, others take it into their own hands." p. 153

Here We Go Again

Gustav is even larger in terms of area than Katrina was, and Katrina was humongous.

If she floods this time, this is probably all she wrote. New Orleans really is history.

Cuba's been bashed and creamed. So has Haiti, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. By tomorrow afternoon we should know.

I'm sick.

Everyone seems to think there's no problem now.

But this is exactly the most dangerous point. The industrial canal is overtopping, and there are fears that it is being eaten away from the bottom and will breach. The upper 9th is flooding -- just as we see in Trouble the Water -- while the wind and rain were still going on, the industrial canal breeched and they flooded much sooner than other parts. In all the repairs and so on, they still, after three years, hadn't gotten around to re-working the design and composition of the walls of the industrial canal.
