LINES OF THE DAY

". . . But the past does not exist independently from the present. Indeed, the past is only past because there is a present, just as I can point to something over there only because I am here. But nothing is inherently over there or here. In that sense, the past has no content. The past -- or more accurately, pastness -- is a position. Thus, in no way can we identify the past as past." p. 15

". . . But we may want to keep in mind that deeds and words are not as distinguishable as often we presume. History does not belong only to its narrators, professional or amateur. While some of us debate what history is or was, others take it into their own hands." p. 153

Steady Rollover to the Right

By Obama, since he clinched the nomination.

This was what I predicted.

Nevertheless, it's distressing and depressing.

More of the same. It's so oppressive -- I feel the weight that had lightened to degree, inflated by hope, has settled back, even heavier.

He let us down just like the corporatist we knew he was would do.

I look at a little differently. All presidential candidates tack to the middle once the nomination has been cinched. What we as progressives must do is keep pressure on him now and once he has been elected.

It's imperative to defeat McCain. We can't fall into the trap of thinking that there's no difference between the two -- look to the 2000 election anytime you find yourself thinking that.

The way I'm feeling at this point, I can't find any difference between him and McCain:

Telecommunications immunityh rollover;

No guts to back up Clark, who only spoke the truth, and spoke it rationally, not emotionally;

Flipped on the D.C. gun ban, which had supported, and then, as a lawyer of Constitutional Law, who thus knows damned well what 'well regulated militia' means, and it doesn't mean every goddamned individual individually stalking the streets packing (just think of how many little doggies who won't stop barking will die now ....)

Giving our tax dollars to churches to teach kids to read???????? We have public education and that's where my education tax dollars are supposed to go;

Sucking up to Israel;

He's not going to leave Iraq.

This may be the first election in which I do not vote.

The way I see it, we have a chance to put into office the most progressive administration since the good side of Lyndon Johnson. The bigger he wins and the greater a majority in Congress that he has, the more he will be able to do and will do. If nothing else, the next president may appoint as many as three Supreme Court justices. Who do you want doing that?

Do you really think his appointments will be that different?

He does have his law degree in Constitutional Law, yet he backs that travesty of the SCOTUS decision that the right to bear arms means private citizens, not a 'militia.' That's just so wrong, and he knows it, and he said so -- only a few months ago.
